Interesting Facts about Peaky Blinders

After these great quotes from all those powerful characters, here are some interesting facts about Peaky Blinders that you may or may not know about.

  1. Peaky Blinders is Based on a Story – Steven Knight, creator of the TV series, said that Peaky Blinders is based on a story that his father used to tell him when he was a kid. Also, around the age of 8 or 9, Knight’s father gave him a piece of paper with a message written in it and told him to deliver it to his uncles, The Sheldons. Later on, they became The Shelbys.
  2. Liam Neeson Helped Sam Neill with His Accent – Sam Neill was born in Northern Ireland and later moved to New Zealand at the age of 7. Producers of the show asked that the accent won’t be too strong so that the lines will be understood, although Northern Ireland accent can be quite challenging. Neill said that after all those years growing in New Zealand, there’s probably no trace of the Northern Ireland accent, but he asked the help of Liam Neeson for the show and got it.
  3. Cillian Murphy Smoked a Lot of Cigarettes for the Show – Believe it or not, but Cillian Murphy doesn’t smoke. During the time when the show takes place, people used to smoke day in and day out, so even though Murphy doesn’t smoke at all, he had to smoke (and a lot!) for the show.
  4. Jason Statham Almost Got a Part in the Show – Steven Knight worked with Statham in the past when he directed him in the 2013 movie Redemption. He wanted to include Statham in this show as well, but due to previous obligations, Statham could not have been part of the show.
  5. Celebrities Love the Show – The show has many celebrity fans all over the world and one of those fans was none other than David Bowie. He was a huge fan of Peaky Blinders and even sent to Cillian Murphy a photo of himself with razor blades in his cap a year before he died. Bowie’s music even features in the third season of the show. Snoop Dogg is also a big fan of the show.
  6. Actors Sometimes Get Confused with the Timeline – The show is not shot in chronological order, so actors sometimes get confused when it comes to the timeline of Peaky Blinders. Murphy even asked director Tim Mielants to draw up four A4 sheets and in his trailer, he followed those sheets to understand where his character is, where he’s going and so on, in order to get his mind right and not confused all the time.
  7. Darby Sabini and Billy Kimber were actually gangsters – At the time, Kimber was a bookie who ran racecourses. However, he died at the age of 63 in a nursing home in Torquay and not at the hands of a Shelby family member. Sabini was a rival of Kimber.
  8. Helen McCrory Learned the Brummie Accent from Ozzy Osbourne – McCorory said that she learned the accent by watching clips of Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy, is also one of the most popular people who came out of Birmingham.
